Reverse osmosis · Edgewood, NM

One faucet in your Edgewood kitchen, filtered down to the essentials

Reverse osmosis is the drinking-water piece of the puzzle. It sits under the sink, feeds its own faucet, and gives you low-mineral water for coffee, cooking and refilling bottles.

Why Edgewood households consider RO

All of Edgewood's water, whether it comes through EPCOR's pipes or up a private well casing, is groundwater from the Estancia Basin. Groundwater carries dissolved minerals and salts, which show up on a test as total dissolved solids. RO pushes water through a semi-permeable membrane that holds most of those back, which is why many people find the water noticeably cleaner tasting.

For well owners, there's a more serious reason. Arsenic occurs naturally in groundwater in parts of the Middle Rio Grande region, and nitrate can't be seen, smelled or tasted. A private well isn't regulated like a public system, so it's on the owner to find out. RO is the standard point-of-use approach for reducing arsenic, nitrate, fluoride and lead. How well it performs depends on the contaminant and your water, so we confirm with lab testing, which we help well owners arrange.

If you're on EPCOR, the utility tests and publishes an annual water quality report. RO for EPCOR customers is usually about taste and preference, and the report is the place to see official results.

One honest caveat: RO doesn't treat bacteria. If a lab test on your well shows bacteria, that's a disinfection job, and we'll refer you to the right help.

The system we install

A 600 GPD tankless RO with an alkaline stage, mounted under the kitchen sink with a dedicated faucet. Being tankless, it doesn't need a storage tank taking up cabinet space. It's $895 on its own or part of the Complete Home System at $4,599, with financing from $59/mo. Our own installers handle it, typically within a half-day visit.

RO sends some water to the drain as part of how it works. In an area the State Engineer has designated a critical management area for groundwater, that's exactly why we install it at one faucet for drinking and cooking, rather than treating the whole house with it.

Which system addresses what?

RO is often confused with softening and filtration. Here's how they divide the work.

SoftenerCarbon filtrationUnder-sink RO
Hardness and scale✔✘At one faucet
Chlorine taste and odor✘✔At one faucet
Total dissolved solids✘✘✔
Arsenic, nitrate, fluoride, lead✘✘Standard approach
Treats the whole house✔✔✘

If scale is the bigger issue, see our Edgewood softener page, or compare all three on the packages page.

Questions about RO in Edgewood

Will the free test tell me if my well has arsenic?

The on-site test covers hardness, TDS, pH, chlorine, iron, manganese and sulfur. Arsenic and nitrate need a certified lab, and we help you set that up.

Do I need RO if I'm on EPCOR water?

Not necessarily. Many EPCOR customers choose it for taste. Read EPCOR's annual water quality report, and we'll explain how your tap readings compare.

Where does the RO unit go if my sink cabinet is crowded?

Because the system is tankless, it needs less room than older RO units with a storage tank. We'll look under your sink during the test and confirm it fits.

Should I soften before RO?

On hard basin groundwater, a softener upstream helps protect the membrane. That's why the Complete Home System pairs them.

More on how the technology works is on our main reverse osmosis page, and local water background is on the Edgewood page.
