Reverse osmosis · Belen

A drinking-water tap for Belen kitchens

Reverse osmosis pushes water through a fine membrane under your sink and delivers it to its own faucet. For Belen families on city water it's a taste upgrade; for those on private wells outside town, it can be the main line of defense for what they drink.

City water and well water need different conversations

Inside city limits, Belen's supply comes from groundwater wells concentrated on the west side by I-25. In 2022 the city completed an arsenic treatment plant to address a naturally occurring element found in parts of the Middle Rio Grande's aquifers. Public systems must meet the federal arsenic limit, and the city's annual water quality report is where you'll see the official numbers. For these households, RO is usually about lower dissolved solids, better coffee and ice, and a little extra peace of mind.

On outlying properties, it's a different story. Private wells aren't regulated like public systems, no plant treats the water, and the owner is responsible for testing. That's where we start: with lab testing for arsenic, nitrate and bacteria, which we help arrange. If arsenic or nitrate turns up, under-sink RO is the standard point-of-use approach for reducing them, and we'll check that it suits your specific results. If bacteria turn up, that needs disinfection, which RO isn't designed for, and we'll point you in the right direction.

What our on-site test adds

Our fifteen-minute visit reads TDS, hardness, pH, chlorine, iron, manganese and sulfur at your sink. TDS gives us a before-and-after benchmark for the RO faucet. Hardness and iron tell us whether a softener upstream would help the membrane last longer.

What RO is built to reduce

  • Arsenic
  • Nitrate
  • Fluoride
  • Lead
  • Total dissolved solids
  • Off tastes from minerals

Results depend on the contaminant and on the water feeding the system, so we confirm with testing.

Tankless reverse osmosis unit with alkaline stage

How a Belen RO install comes together

The unit
A 600 GPD tankless RO with an alkaline stage, so there's no bulky storage tank eating cabinet space.
Placement
Under the kitchen sink, with its own faucet drilled into the counter or sink deck.
On a well
Any whole-house equipment stays after the pressure tank; the RO serves the kitchen line from there.
Price
$895 on its own, or included in the Complete Home System at $4,599.
Time
Usually a few hours, by our own installer, and well within half a day when paired with a softener.

Reverse osmosis in Belen: common questions

Do I need RO now that Belen treats for arsenic?

Not necessarily. The city's plant is designed so its water meets the federal standard. Many families still choose RO for taste and lower dissolved solids, but it's a preference, not a requirement.

I'm on a well south of town. What should I test first?

Get a lab test for arsenic, nitrate and bacteria. We'll help you set that up, then match treatment to the results.

Will RO remove the sodium a softener adds?

Yes, RO reduces sodium along with other dissolved solids, which is one reason it pairs well with a softener.

How often do the filters get changed?

It depends on the stage and how much water you use. The system's indicator tells you when it's time.
