Reverse osmosis · Bernalillo

A second line of treatment, right where you fill your glass

Bernalillo's town utility already treats its wells for arsenic. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink is for households that want drinking and cooking water with as little dissolved in it as practical.

Under-sink reverse osmosis system

"The town removes arsenic. Why would I want RO?"

It's a fair question, and we hear it a lot in Bernalillo. The town's pressure-filter plant is designed to bring naturally occurring arsenic down to the federal standard, and the town's annual water quality report is the right place to read the official results. We're not going to tell you that water is unsafe.

What RO adds is a different kind of result. A reverse osmosis membrane reduces total dissolved solids, the general mineral load that groundwater picks up from the aquifer. It's also the standard point-of-use approach for reducing arsenic, nitrate, fluoride and lead. So for some families it's about taste and clear ice; for others it's about having a second barrier under their own sink, especially with small kids in the house. Either reason is a good one, and neither requires us to exaggerate anything about the town's water.

One more detail: because Bernalillo disinfects with sodium hypochlorite, our RO system includes carbon pre-filtration ahead of the membrane, which also takes chlorine taste out of what you drink.

What gets installed

  • 600 GPD tankless RO, so there's no storage tank under the sink
  • Alkaline remineralization stage for a smoother taste
  • Dedicated drinking-water faucet at the sink
  • Connection to the cold line and the sink drain
  • Lifetime warranty, installed by our own team

Most Bernalillo kitchens have room under the sink for a tankless unit, even in older homes with compact cabinets. The visit typically runs well under half a day. If you're adding RO alongside a softener, it can draw from the softened line. Read more about the technology on our main reverse osmosis page.

RO on its own

$895 installed

Or as part of the Complete Home System with softening and carbon filtration, $4,599. Financing from $59/mo.

On a private well near Bernalillo?

Homes outside town limits that rely on their own well don't get the town's arsenic treatment, and no one tests that water but the owner. For you, RO may be more than a preference. We'll run the on-site test (hardness, TDS, pH, chlorine, iron and manganese, sulfur) and help you get lab testing for arsenic, nitrate and bacteria. RO performance depends on the contaminant and the rest of your water chemistry, so we confirm the fit with results in hand. Bacteria calls for disinfection, which isn't something RO is meant to provide.

Reverse osmosis in Bernalillo: common questions

Do I need RO if I'm on Town of Bernalillo water?

Not necessarily. The town treats for arsenic and disinfects. RO is an option if you want lower dissolved solids and an extra point-of-use barrier for drinking and cooking water.

Will RO get rid of the chlorine taste?

Yes, at the kitchen faucet. The carbon stages ahead of the membrane reduce chlorine. For the shower and the rest of the house, whole-home carbon filtration is the tool.

I'm on a well outside town. Will RO handle arsenic?

RO is the standard point-of-use approach for arsenic, but results vary with your water. Get a lab test first; we'll help arrange it and then confirm the system fits your results.

Does RO remove the minerals I want to keep?

It removes most dissolved minerals, which is why our system finishes with an alkaline stage that adds a little back for taste.
